The Rockwell scale is a hardness scale based on indentation hardness of a material. The Rockwell test measures the depth of penetration of an indenter under a large load (major load) compared to the penetration made by a preload (minor load). [1] There are different scales, denoted by a single letter, that use different loads or indenters.

However, I have found that you can roughly estimate the hardness to within about 2 1/2 points by judging how easily the file digs in or skates on the steel. Amazon also sells other hardness testers for around $300 or so.

I often see to check that your HT has worked that you can do a file test by running a file over the HT'd blade and seeing if it skips or bites. How much pressure do you put on the file? Do you run it over a flat or an edge?
