Constituted as 460th Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 19 May 1943. Activated on 1 Jul 1943. Trained for combat with B-24's. Moved to Italy, Jan-Feb 1944, and became part of 15th Air Force. They entered combat in March 1944 and operated primarily as a strategic bombardment organization until April 1945.
On its arrival in Italy, the 460th Bomb Group (H) became the first operational group of the newly formed 55 th Wing of the Fifteenth Air Force, with headquarters in the small town of Spinazzola, about ten miles from the 460 th base site.

Primary strategic bombardment Air Force of the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) operating from airfields in Southern Italy. Had 15 B-24 groups. Bombing raids against targets in Italy, then took part in raids on Germany, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Romania.
