Neurologic examination often reveals asymmetric ataxia, asymmetric stride length particularly in the pelvic limbs, and weakness involving one to all limbs.

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a common cause of infectious neurological disease of horses in the Americas. Diagnosis is based on neurological signs, exclusion of differential diagnoses, and demonstration of intrathecal antibody production.
Horses are exposed to the disease when they ingest (eat or drink) parts of insects, particu-larly mayflies, dragonflies, caddis flies, damselflies, stone-flies, snails, or their larvae. Vaccinated horses that contract the disease usually live, unvaccinated horses may die. Prevention: Annual vaccination.
