A mid-nineteenth-century bird's eye-view of Japan reflects the spatial imaginaries circulated through maps. Recognizable are Japan's main islands, Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. Three smaller islands, identified as Iki, Tsushima and Oki islands, are at the western horizon.
