The game puts the player into the role of the "dungeon keeper": instead of valiantly storming a dungeon like a hero, killing monsters, and taking the treasures, the player builds the dungeons, recruits the monsters, sets the traps, and fends off the (computer-controlled) heroes that regularly.
In Dungeon Keeper, the player builds and manages a dungeon, protecting it from invasion by "hero" characters who steal treasure, kill monsters, and ultimately cause the player to fail. The ultimate goal of the game is to conquer the world by destroying heroic forces and/or hostile dungeon guardians within range.
