Reviewing literature from the earliest sixteenth–century costume books to studies on fashion history today, the authors examine how the old costume history became the new fashion history and how cultural and critical studies are affecting the study of fashion.
This paper is built on an interdisciplinary model stemming from fashion studies towards semiotics, sociology and cultural and art history. I define 'fashion' as a permanently changing progeny of modernity linked to capitalism and consumerism, but also to modernism and technological progress.
Studying clothing trends over long periods of time offers anthropologists a treasure trove of informa-tion about how people’s clothing is affected by happenings in the world, whether economic, political, or social. The effects are felt from both localized and broad sources.
The volume concludes with a critical view of fashion and globalisation, and explores the deep connections between the fashion industry, the global economy, and the politics of production and wearing in the contemporary world.
