Amorsolo is considered to be the most influential Philippine painter of the 20th century to contemporary Filipino art and artists, such as abstract painter Federico Aguilar Alcuaz. Even as his health deteriorated due to diabetes, cataracts, and arthritis, he continued to produce a substantial volume of works, in part to support his large family.
Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (1892-1972), Philippines' first National Artist in Painting (1972), the so-called "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art", Amorsolo earned a degree from the Liceo de Manila Art School in 1909 and entered the University of the Philippines' (UP) School of Fine Arts.
During the war, he documented the destruction of many landmarks in Manila and the pain, tragedy and death experienced by Filipino people, with his subjects including "women mourning their dead husbands, files of people with pushcarts and makeshift bags leaving a dark burning city tinged with red from fire and blood."
18 lut 2020 · Among his most famous works include depictions of the Blood Compact, the First Mass at Limasawa, and most notably The Progress of Medicine in the Philippines, which has been restored three times. A famous replica of this mural resides at the lobby of the Philippine General Hospital.
