Severe drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent the aeolian processes (wind erosion) caused the phenomenon.

The Dust Bowl. Beginning in 1934, states in the Great Plains were hit with severe drought, causing soil erosion and creating a series of massive dust storms. Combined with the financial crisis of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl uprooted thousands of small farmers, many of whom headed west in search of a better life.
The phenomenon known as Dust Bowl was a horror of the middle part of the last century, and the result of a destructive mix of brutal weather and uninformed agricultural practices that left farmland vulnerable.
