The medical course at Peradeniya is taught entirely in English. All evaluations and examinations, both written and oral, are conducted in English. Therefore a good knowledge of English is a great advantage when it comes to academic work. English language skills are divided in to four components.

The University offers a broad based undergraduate curriculum to its students. The available undergraduate programmes are of either three years (General Degree) or four/ five years (Special Degree) duration.
In 1990, the Faculty of Dental Sciences expanded into 6 Departments of Study, namely, Department of Community Dental Health, Oral Medicine and Periodontology, Oral Pathology, Oral Surgery, Prosthetic Dentistry, and Restorative Dentistry. A new department of Basic Sciences was created in 1997.
