The faculty of medicine at peradeniya was opened in 1962 as the second medical school in the country to meet the increasing demand for medical education. At present the Faculty has 150 academic staff members and 180 non academic staff. There are 15 departments of study and six units.

Currently Bhutanese and Maldivian students are admitted. Curriculum. Background. Despite been nearly 50 years old, the Faculty of Medicine (FoM), University of Peradeniya (UoP) has an evolving and dynamic curriculum. In 2002 an attempt was made to create an integrated curriculum.
Faculty of Medicine is one of the nine faculties in University of Peradeniya. It is considered to be one of the leading medical faculties in Sri Lanka which requires the highest entry qualification in GCE Advanced Level examination.

The University of Peradeniya is heir to the University of Ceylon which was established in 1942. It is the largest and best-endowed university in Sri Lanka. It has eight faculties (schools) and 72 academic departments, an undergraduate enrolment of approximately 9000 and a postgraduate enrolment of approximately 2000.
