19 maj 2021 · Schizophrenia is considered early onset when it starts before the age of 18. Onset of schizophrenia in children younger than age 13 is extremely rare. Symptoms can vary in type and severity over time, with periods of worsening and remission of symptoms. Some symptoms may always be present.
Positive symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and speech patterns and abnormal motor behaviour, which may include bizarre movements or catatonia (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Coghill, Bonnar, Duke, Graham, & Seth, 2009).
Abstract. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) typically have a diagnostically recognizable onset in young adulthood, yet it is not unusual that help-seeking due to initial SSD-related clinical manifestations emerge in earlier developmental phases, such as childhood and adolescence.
Sometimes, children and adolescents with schizophrenia may present with symptoms of odd behavior and social withdrawal symptoms. Such children should be evaluated for personality disorders such as schizoid and schizotypal disorder before considering the diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Onset of schizophrenia is typically from mid-adolescence to the mid-30s, with a peak age of onset in the 20s. Features in adolescents and young adults are similar.

22 kwi 2024 · Schizophrenia in children and adolescents is a syndrome consisting of positive and negative symptoms of psychosis that impact development, psychosocial, and cognitive functioning. The etiology of this syndrome is poorly understood, but early diagnosis and treatment are critical to limit the morbidity of the disorder.
