The Northrop F-5 is a family of supersonic light fighter aircraft initially designed as a privately funded project in the late 1950s by Northrop Corporation. There are two main models: the original F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter variants, and the extensively updated F-5E and F-5F Tiger II variants.

13 lip 2020 · The F-5A/B had no radar, but the F-5E/F did beginning in the early-1970s. It was a short range (~10 nm) search & track unit with ranging/lead computing for the gun. Subsequently better radars were fitted, all still relatively short range primarily due to the small size of the radar dish/receiver.

12 gru 2022 · The Brazilian program, renamed F-5M, has a new Grifo-F radar as well as many avionics and cockpit upgrades, including the Dash helmet. The F-5M is now outfitted with new weapon systems such as the Beyond Visual Range Derby missile, the Python IV short-range air-to-air missile, the SMKBs smart bomb, and a variety of other weaponry.
Following upgrades and a new designation, the F-5E/F Tiger II radar would include the APQ-159 pulse-doppler radar. This upgrade would double the radar range, increase the off-boresight tracking angles, and greatly improve reliability.
F-5 Tiger II radar. The F-5 Tiger II was initially equipped with an AN/APQ-153 radar. In all the upgraded variants produced later, the Emerson AN/APQ-159 radar was installed. The aircraft comprises an air-to-air fire control radar system and a lead computing gunsight.
