A mathematical symbol is a figure or a combination of figures that is used to represent a mathematical object, an action on mathematical objects, a relation between mathematical objects, or for structuring the other symbols that occur in a formula.
If you have one function $f(x)$, and another function $g(x)$, then we can create a new function named $g\circ f$ (read as: "$g$ composed with $f$") that is defined as $$(g\circ f)(x)=g(f(x))$$ For example, if $f(x)=x+1$, and $g(x)=2x-1$, then $$(g\circ f)(x)=g(f(x))=g(x+1)=2(x+1)-1=2x+1$$
The list below has some of the most common symbols in mathematics. However, these symbols can have other meanings in different contexts other than math.

A basic understanding about mathematical terminology is essential to a solid foundation in higher mathematics. To that end, the following is a compilation of some of the most well-adapted, commonly-used symbols in mathematics.
This leaflet provides information on symbols and notation commonly used in mathematics. It is designed to enable further information to be found from resources in mathcentre (www.mathcentre.ac.uk). In the table below, the symbol or notation is given in column one.
Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols is a Unicode block comprising styled forms of Latin and Greek letters and decimal digits that enable mathematicians to denote different notions with different letter styles. The letters in various fonts often have specific, fixed meanings in particular areas of mathematics.
