Melanomas in the eye are rare, but diffuse (spread out) iris melanomas are the most common eye tumors in cats. These tumors develop from the melanocytes of the iris and are cancerous (malignant). Another type of eye melanoma in cats is the limbal (sometimes called epibulbar) melanoma.
