The #REF! error shows when a formula refers to a cell that’s not valid. This happens most often when cells that were referenced by formulas get deleted, or pasted over.

You can help with this as follows: Select the cell containing the formula. Click on a cell reference (say A2) and press the F4 key.

If you just entered a formula, start with that cell and check to see if you refer to the cell itself. For example, cell A3 might contain the formula = (A1+A2)/A3. Formulas like =A1+1 (in cell A1) also cause circular reference errors. While you're looking, check for indirect references.
