Introduction. In a narrow, yet highly unspecific, sense, a number system is a way in which humans represent numbers. We have limited our discussion already, for it is merely humans among all known species who have the ability to count and form numbers which we later can perform calculations upon.

The first recorded instance of a positional number system was the Babylonian sexagesimal system (“Babylonian numerals”). In this system, when a number was written out as a string of symbols, the position of each symbol was important and carried meaning (see Fig. 3 and Fig. 4).
A wealth of recent evidence from animal, infant, and neuroimaging studies suggests that human numerical competence is rooted in an evolved number module. In this study, I adopted an epidemiological perspective to examine the cultural transmission of numerical concepts in the history of mathematics.
