In a narrow, yet highly unspecific, sense, a number system is a way in which humans represent numbers. We have limited our discussion already, for it is merely humans among all known species who have the ability to count and form numbers which we later can perform calculations upon.

A wealth of recent evidence from animal, infant, and neuroimaging studies suggests that human numerical competence is rooted in an evolved number module. In this study, I adopted an epidemiological perspective to examine the cultural transmission of numerical concepts in the history of mathematics.
In this paper we trace the evolution of number from the whole numbers known since the dawn of counting, to the discovery of the octonions in the 19th century and their connection with string theory and the grand unified ‘theory of everything’ in the 20th century.(FAQ13) The main paper is a very brief three pages, followed by remarks ...
Comparing the historical evolution of numerical notations to the history of writing systems suggests, instead, that a host of social factors influence the adoption, transmission, retention and replacement of numeral systems.
