The largest enlargement of the European Union (EU), in terms of number of states and population, took place on 1 May 2004. The simultaneous accessions concerned the following countries (sometimes referred to as the "A10" countries [1][2]): Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
Enlargement happens when new countries join the European Union. This has taken place several times in the EU’s history, each time transforming both the EU and the countries that join.
This historic enlargement of the EU from 15 to 25 members is the culmination of a long accession process leading to the reunification of a Europe that had been divided for half a century by the Iron Curtain and the Cold War.

This was the largest single enlargement in terms of people, and number of countries. Austria, Finland and Sweden join the EU. The 15 members now cover almost the whole of western Europe.
26 kwi 2024 · On 1 May 2004, the enlargement integrated over 74 million citizens into the EU and shifted its external borders significantly eastward. The EU now had 25 member states, close to 459 million citizens, and a share of over 21% of global GDP (based on purchasing power parities).
