As referred by literature (e.g. Sullivan & Mainiero, 2008; Holtbrügge, Friedmann & Puck, 2010; Kaye & Giulioni, 2016), the retention is a key factor of organizational’ effectiveness, especially during recession periods, namely the difficulty in keeping the more talented employees.

The objective of this study is to critically analyze the various works done in the field of employee retention and highlight factors responsible for employee departure and retention initiatives followed to retain them.
Employee retention refers to an organisational effort in designing strategies and initiatives that help current staff to stay with the organisation (Gangwani et al., 2016). It is a process of continuously engaging with and physically keeping or holding hired employees within the organisation (Msengeti & Obwogi, 2015).
