In 1989 Empire became a FAR 121 operator after the purchase of Pacific Alaska Airlines and two Fairchild F-27 aircraft. In August Empire started F27 services for FedEx Express. In 1990, Empire added more cargo routes and performed its first heavy maintenance check on a Fairchild F-27.
15 mar 2022 · Empire Airlines has started commercial operations with its first ATR 72-600F (1680), carrying out the first revenue flight today from Anchorage (ANC) to Fairbanks (FAI). The new production freighter belongs to FedEx Express and is in CMI service with the Idaho-based airline.

FedEx Express, like most cargo airlines, operates a fleet of older and less efficient aircraft when compared to passenger airlines. However, the company has been making an effort to phase out older aircraft, especially its trijets , and replace them with newer twin-jet models.
