The KNOX HOUSE MUSEUM is the first commercial building in El Cajon, erected eleven years after the end of the Civil War. It is the original portion of the hotel that Amaziah Lord Knox built in 1876 near what is now the southwest corner of Main Street and Magnolia Avenue.
Located in downtown El Cajon at 131 Rea Avenue, the museum is open every Friday 11 AM to 3 PM & Saturday from Noon to 4 PM. Admission is free. Donations accepted. Take a Virtual Tour. This house turned museum is well worth the hour or two to learn more about the Western history in San Diego County. Yes, there are still cowboys in East County. The museum collection is not only one of Wieghorst paintings and memorabilia, but also other Western stuff as well. Visitors and residents alike should take the time to visit!
