Ehrlichia canis (E. canis) is the most common rickettsial species involved in ehrlichiosis in dogs, but other strains of the organism will occasionally be found. Because of its origin in military dogs in Vietnam, it has also been called tracker dog disease and tropical canine pancytopenia.
Canine ehrlichiosis is usually caused by the rickettsia Ehrlichia canis, although other types of Ehrlichia are sometimes involved. (Rickettsiae are a specialized type of bacteria that live only inside other cells.) Carried by ticks, the organism infects a certain type of white blood cell (called monocytes) and causes fever and other signs.

Ehrlichiosis is an infection caused by obligate, intracellular bacteria that primarily affect cells of the immune system in dogs, cats, and people. In the past, the causative organisms were classified in the genus Ehrlichia on morphologic and ecologic grounds.
Bacteria appear intracytoplasmically in clusters called morulae (Figure 1) and can be divided into three classes based on whether they infect mononuclear cells, granulocytes, or thrombocytes. Ehrlichia canis is the species most often associated with canine ehrlichiosis, but other species also cause natural infection.
