1. Erikson regarded the ego as an autonomous system. It dealt with reality through the conscious thought process, including perception, attention, and memory. It was not at the mercy of the id or super-ego. 2. Erikson stressed the historical and cultural setting in which a person's ego was formed.
Erikson is credited with being one of the originators of ego psychology, which emphasized the role of the ego as being more than a servant of the id. Although Erikson accepted Freud's theory, he did not focus on the parent-child relationship and gave more importance to the role of the ego, particularly the person's progression as self. [ 34 ]
His two major contributions to psychodynamic thought include a reappraisal of the ego and an extended view of developmental stages. The New Ego. Erik Erikson believed that the ego Freud described was far more than just a mediator between the superego and the id. He saw the ego as a positive driving force in human development and personality.
Each new stage is characterized by a period of development during which the child must resolve a psychosocial “crisis” (turning point) in order for him or her to mature in terms of ego identity and related ego strengths or virtues.
I locate the origins of the American independent tradition and intersubjective ego psychology in the work of Hans Loewald and Erik Erikson. Both Loewald and Erikson begin from self-identification as ego psychologists, but each brings in, foundationally, something of the relational-interpersonal.
