The kidney’s filtration rate, called the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), shows how well the kidneys are filtering. An estimated 37 million adults in the United States may have chronic kidney disease (CKD) but nearly 90% are unaware of their condition.
The glomerular filtration rate measures how well your kidneys filter the wastes from your blood and is the best overall measure of kidney function. It helps determine if you have any kidney damage. If your filtration rate is low, your kidneys are not working properly. Normal filtration rate in young adults is about 90–100 millilitres every minute.
Two tests are used to check for kidney disease. • A blood test checks your GFR, which tells how well your kidneys are filtering. • A urine test checks for albumin in your urine, a sign of kidney damage. You need to have your kidneys checked because you can’t feel kidney disease.

Serum Creatinine and Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) CKD is an eGFR less than 60. eGFR estimates how well your kidneys are filtering blood. As kidney disease gets worse, the creatinine goes up and the eGFR goes down.
