TL;DR on which is the best material: DEFINITELY and without contest ultra poly - it takes the least damage of any relevant material, it repairs the 2nd best, and it also tends to be up there with the lightest armor materials (which does also matter this wipe).
Armor Materials works as a plain simple durability modifier (actually damage modifier) meaning that the durability the game shows us means absolutely nothing as long as we don't know the modifier. Each material have that destructibility number, you can see it as how much armor wears when it's hit: the lower the better. A simple math is to divide the max durability of the armor by the destructibility of it's material.
