All social science (and many other) surveys measure respondents’ educational attainment. However, most of them do it in diferent ways, resulting in incoherent education variables across surveys. This complicates the cumulation of diferent datasets and hampers survey data reuse.
Good options are demographics (age, gender, education level) for individual-level surveys and ‘firmographics’ (employee count, annual revenues, industry) for firm-level surveys. Never start with an open-ended question.
