Continued attention to the appropriate design, conduct, and analysis of such studies holds promise for increasing the rigor and impact of such studies.

However, as with any other research approach and method, it is easy to conduct a survey of poor quality rather than one of high quality and real value.

All social science (and many other) surveys measure respondents’ educational attainment. However, most of them do it in different ways, resulting in incoherent education variables across surveys.
This review article prepares the reader to name the steps of designing and administering high-quality surveys in medical education research, identify the characteristics of both well-written and poorly written survey questions, and apply the principles of survey design to write and revise surveys for use in their own research.
