Sureños ([suˈɾe.ɲos]; Spanish for Southerners), also known as Southern United Raza, Sur 13 or Sureños X3, are groups of loosely affiliated gangs [ 38 ] that pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia while in U.S. state and federal correctional facilities.
Sureño gangs that identify with the color red are known as "Red Rag Sureños." Their choice of 'red' as a representative color typically predates the Sureño/ Norteño concept. Other examples include: Del Sol (yellow), East Side Clover (green), and Watts Varrio Grape Street (purple).

Sur 13 (Sureños): Prison Gang Profile. The Suernos began in the 1950s, primarily in prison, as a method of protection against the dominant white inmate population. While according to the Modesto Bee, the Norteños still outnumber Sur 13 (Sureños) 4-to-1 in central California, both gangs share similar modes of operation.
