20 mar 2019 · Eastern hemlock grows from sea level to about 2,500 feet in elevation in the northeastern and northern portions of the range.
Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), also called Canada hemlock or hemlock spruce, is a slow-growing long-lived tree which unlike many trees grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more.
The eastern hemlock grows well in shade and is very long lived, with the oldest recorded specimen, found in Tionesta, Pennsylvania, being at least 554 years old. [7] The tree generally reaches heights of about 31 m (102 ft), [5] but exceptional trees have been recorded up to 53 m (174 ft). [8]
Native to the eastern United States, the hemlock resembles a large Christmas tree with its broadly pyramidal, pendulous branches and fine, dark-green needles on widely spaced branches that give it a delicate, lacy feel.
DESCRIPTION AND GROWTH. Mature eastern hemlock commonly reaches a height of 80 to 100 feet with a d.b.h. of 2 to 3 feet, although individual trees may become much larger. (The record for age is 988 years; for d.b.h., 84 inches; and for total height, 160 feet.)
Eastern Hemlock grows at a slow to medium rate, about 12-24 in. per year (30-60 cm). A graceful shade tree, it can also be trimmed into a magnificent hedge or used as a specimen or in groupings.
