DTP, Dynamic Trunking Protocol, is a trunking protocol that is developed and proprietary to Cisco which is used to automatically negotiate trunks between Cisco switches. Trunk negotiations are managed by DTP only if the port is directly connected to each other.

Issuing the command switchport mode trunk -by itself- does not actually disable DTP on the port. So your friend was, in fact, in error, but not for any of the reasons stated above.
To enable trunking from a Cisco switch to a device that does not support DTP, use the switchport mode trunk and switchport nonegotiate interface configuration mode commands. This causes the interface to become a trunk but not generate DTP frames.
