Hero editor keeps saving as Character.key - in stead of [name].d2s - Even when I load an existing char that is working. I checked the name (should be allright), I can see no way of resolving this

If the mod keeps up with patches, then I think you can use the editor if you avoid any mod-specific features (like stackables). Another workaround is to just use a clean character, create the items and then transfer them.
