Double chess is a chess variant invented by Julian S. Grant Hayward in 1916. [1] [2] The game is played on a 16×12 chessboard with each player in control of two complete armies placed side by side. The rules were published in the January 1929 issue of British Chess Magazine.

General rules. The game is played in two teams: Yellow and Red play against Green and Blue. Move order: Yellow, Green, Red, Blue. The teams win and lose together. The game ends at the first checkmate, and the team whose member delivered the mate wins.
The FIDE General Regulations for Competitions shall be used in conjunction with the Laws of Chess and shall apply to all official FIDE competitions. These Rules shall also be applied to all FIDE-rated competitions, amended where appropriate.
