Once you understand the units you’ll be working with, it’s time to learn how to apply them to dosage calculations. The most common method is called dimensional analysis.
Checklist for Dimensional Analysis: Gather Information. Set-up Format. Plug-in numbers using the 2 Rules (and Buddy System)**. Plug-in (or create) needed constants**. Multiply & divide. Round. **Move back and forth between steps 3 & 4 as needed until the 2 Rules are satisfied.
**Special Note for converting between fluid ounces and milliliters: 8 fl. oz. = 250 mL = 1 cup (NOT 8 fl. oz. x 30 mL/fl.oz. = 240 mL) 4 fl. oz. = 125 mL = 1 2 cup (NOT 4 fl. oz. x 30 mL/fl.oz. = 120 mL) These are direct conversions as used in nursing practice! For all other conversions (e.g. 3 fl. oz) use 1 fl. oz. = 30 mL to convert.
