Infections of the ear and other ear disorders are common in dogs. Your veterinarian will examine your dog’s ears at every routine checkup. If the dog has a history of previous ear infections or other problems with the ear, you should provide that information to the veterinarian.
Head shaking, ear scratching, rubbing the affected ear on the floor, and rotating the head toward the affected side are often noted. The ear is usually painful and may have a discharge and inflammatory changes in the ear canal. Inflammation of the outer ear (otitis externa) that recurs may be another sign.
Otitis media, inflammation of the middle ear (the tympanic bulla, the opening of the auditory tube, and the ear ossicles), is uncommon in veterinary medicine. Clinical signs include recurrent otitis externa, head shaking, pain with opening the mouth, Horner syndrome, dry eye, and facial nerve palsy.
