The survivors of the Donner Party settled throughout California, and some became quite well known with numerous descendants. Helen Whitworth is a member of the McCutchen family. Her great-uncle was William McCutchen, a hero of the Donner Party, who rode ahead for supplies and returned with the Second Relief.

It was widely circulated that members of the party resorted to cannibalism after their food ran out, giving the party its lasting notoriety.

The Donner party were 81 American Pioneers that set out for California in a wagon train in 1846 by the beginning of November 1846 the emigrants had reached the Sierra Nevada, where they became trapped by an early, heavy snowfall near Truckee now called Donner Lake, high in the mountains.
