Donner Lake, formerly known as Truckee Lake, [2] is a freshwater lake in Northeast California on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the much larger Lake Tahoe. A moraine serves as a natural dam for the lake.
Donner Lake is a gorgeous, calm lake that has beaches for kids, Watersport rentals, and great food nearby. This year it was the warmest I've ever been in, great for swimming. Wonderful for SUP, too, as it's calm. Less traffic than heading for Lake Tahoe.
Donner Memorial State Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset! The Visitor Center is open daily from 10am to 5pm and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Huge beautiful lake with mountain scenery. Donner Lake is stunning in the winter and summer. We always try to visit this gem during our drive to Reno.
