In dogs and cats, amoxicillin is more bioavailable (better absorbed from the GI tract) than is ampicillin, so its dosage is lower. Absorption of ampicillin is also affected by feeding, so successful treatment may be easier to achieve with amoxicillin.
Selected antimicrobials: amoxicillin, amoxicillin clavulanate, cephalosporins, trimethoprim-sulfadiazine and enrofloxacin. Drugs should be given in 2 to 3 equal subdoses per day, and one of the dose administered prior to a period of confinement. The antimicrobial therapy should last for 10 days to 2 weeks.
Successful antimicrobial therapy requires an appropriate choice of antibiotic, including dose, frequency, and duration. UTI Diagnosis and Localization. The gold standard for UTI diagnosis is urine culture.
Treatment of intact male dogs requires antimicrobials that penetrate the prostate gland, e.g., fluoroquinolones, trimethoprim, doxycycline, and chloramphenicol. Penicillins and cephalosporins do not penetrate well and should not be used.
Trimethoprim-sulfonamide is another first tier option but may be associated with greater adverse event concerns and is difficult to recommend over amoxicillin or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. The recommended duration of therapy is 3–5 days. The short end of that dosing period may be optimal, but veterinary research is currently limited.
