Treatment of Pulmonary Thromboembolism in Dogs and Cats. Supportive care. Supportive care should address hypoxemia, shock, and anxiety associated with PTE. Hypoxemic patients (PaO2 < 80 mmHg) should be placed on oxygen supplementation with either an oxygen cage or nasal cannula.
How is pulmonary thromboembolism in dogs treated? Many dogs with thromboembolism are first treated as inpatients until the oxygen levels in their blood return to normal. Oxygen therapy may be a part of their treatment, but response to oxygen therapy is variable.
Pulmonary thromboembolism is difficult to diagnose because signs and test results resemble those seen with other diseases. X-rays, echocardiography (an ultrasound of the heart), and other specialized tests may be helpful. Treatment is aimed at supporting the heart, blood vessels, and lungs.

15 sie 2020 · 3 RESULTS. From the medical records at TCSVM and OSU-CVM, a total of 100 dogs with ATh were included (61 and 39 dogs, respectively). Aortic thrombosis was diagnosed by ultrasonography in 91 cases and by direct visualization at necropsy in 9 cases.
Dogs with ATh have a poor prognosis, with nonambulatory dogs at the time of presentation having worse outcome. Although the presence of comorbid conditions associated with hypercoagulability is common, an underlying cause for ATh was not always identified.
