In some dogs, this nasolacrimal duct can become obstructed, or blocked. Obstruction may result in tears overflowing and running out of the eye. This overflow of tears can lead to moisture and tear staining below the eye.

Absence of the nasal tear duct openings at birth is known as imperforate lacrimal puncta. This is an infrequent cause of watering eyes in young dogs. Therapy consists of surgically opening the blocked duct and keeping it open by inserting a tube or suture during healing.
If the naso-lacrimal duct becomes blocked, does not open properly, or becomes inflamed or infected, it does not drain tears properly, causing tears to spill down your dog’s face. There are several treatments that can be used to unblock a tear duct and restore functioning.

In calves, multiple openings of the nasolacrimal duct may empty tears onto the lower eyelid and medial canthus, causing chronic dermatitis. Treatment in dogs, foals, and young camelids consists of surgically opening the blocked orifice and maintaining patency by catheterization for several weeks during healing.
