While a dish of spaghetti and meatballs is an Italian-American favorite, most Italians living in the homeland eat their pasta as a primo and enjoy their meatballs (polpette) as a secondo.
13 paź 2022 · Italy does have their own version of meatballs, but they’re very different from what we know here. Known as polpettes, they’re very rarely eaten alongside pasta. These golf ball sized bites are also not necessarily made from ground beef, as American meatballs are.
In Italy, we do have meatballs (smaller than the classic ones you have with spaghetti and meatballs) and while every nonna has a different recipe, we usually had a pinch of nutmeg to the mix. We either pan fry them or cook them in tomato sauce with a bit of oregano and have them as a main with no pasta.

24 mar 2018 · Contrary to the popular North American way of plopping meatballs on top of a bowl of spaghetti, in Italy (as well as my home) meatballs are served as a second course. The fragrant tomato sauce that the meatballs simmered in is tossed with pasta as the first course.
