The trouble with "ping" is that it's not strictly a name server lookup tool (like nslookup) - for instance if you ping a hostname, it can be resolved to an IP address by a number of methods: DNS lookup, host file lookup, WINS (god forbid) or NetBIOS broadcast.

8 paź 2020 · first, "show network eth0" command will give you the information about what DNS servers and domain name as configured for the network adapter. second, "show myself" command will give you the hostname of this server.
26 cze 2015 · Everything appears to be working ok until this morning. It looks like reverse lookup isn’t working nslookup gives me a “non-existent domain” error. And adding a static a record with the update ptr record box check gives an error. I only see a few records in the reverse lookup zone.
6 sie 2013 · We were working an issue in our Publisher and Subscribers and performed a "utils diagnose test" on each through the command line. It passed everything but reverse dns lookup. Does anyone know how to fix that type error? Thanks in advance. We are running CUCM 8.6(2a)SU3.

18 lis 2010 · The forward DNS entries ("A" records) for windows machines on the domain are populated automatically. However, the reverse DNS entries ("PTR" Records) are not. The reverse lookup zone exists, and I can add entries to it manually, but it doesn't automatically populate.
