This figure template "DNA Structure" is assembled using dynamic BioRender assets (icons, lines, shapes and/or text) and is fully editable. To customize your own personalized figure using this template as a starting point, click "Use Template".
In this activity, you will build your own model to understand how DNA works. DNA is a simple molecule made up of four types of chemical building blocks called nucleotides: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G).
Copy the template diagrams to colored paper for lab groups (put each template on a separate color.) For a speedy assembly, give each student 4 bases, 4 sugars, and 4 phosphates. Alternately, for a longer strand and a more team-based approach, give DNA Model Templates
• DNA is a polymer of nucleotide monomers, each consisting of a phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar, and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), or cytosine (C). • The nucleotides of DNA are arranged into a double helix based on the rules of base complementarity.
Construct the right side of your DNA molecule by putting together in sequence a cytosine, thymine, guanine and adenine nucleotide. Complete the left side of the DNA ladder by adding complementary nucleotides or nucleotides that fit. Your finished model should resemble a ladder.

Each original DNA strand serves as a template on which its complement is built. This results in two identical DNA molecules. Each molecule consists of one original strand and one new strand. The sequence of the three bases is called a codon. Each PERSON’S DNA profile is unique! What is DNA Profiling?
