Even though the 7.62×39 is a lighter bullet, there is just more room for a higher powder charge in the .308 cartridges which gives it much more energy leaving the muzzle.

But you shouldn't be a bit surprised to find guns chambered in the U.S. for this cartridge that use a .308 groove diameter.
