The gittern was a very popular instrument from the 13th to 15th centuries. It can be seen in numerous paintings and carvings, and it is mentioned by Chaucer. This gittern is based closely on one depicted in Simone Martini's “Saint Martin is knighted”, c.1320. String length is 45.5cm.

It seems first to have been designated as a "dangerous" interval when Guido of Arezzo developed his system of hexachords and with the introduction of B flat as a diatonic note, at much the same time acquiring its nickname of "Diabolus in Musica" ("the devil in music").
