The way you build is going to depend on how meme-y you want to be. You can go full meme and use Conversion and make a big Thorns army (probably the least good option, but most fun). This version will want a weapon like Grief that is very fast and has Ignore Target Defense.

Thorns only really benefits merc and summons, as merc takes 200% damage from enemies and summons 400%. Due to them taking increased damage, thorns works a lot better. If you want thorns on your paladin, rather than speccing into it; since it has no synergies as far as I remember, get an act 1 merc with Edge and Bramble for 30-36 thorns
