With its nautical focus, marine monsters and topographical wonders, the Queen Mary Atlas shows us a world in which geographical knowledge was rapidly advancing and in which two Tudor queens sought to put Britain on the map.
This is a map of Europe, with parts of Asia and Africa roughly sketched. It is dated 3 May 1595, in the time of Elizabeth I. The countries on the map are written in English and, in some cases, Latin. We don't know why it was drawn or who made it, but from looking at it we can see what ideas the Tudors might have had about their world. Questions
