When Emilia's husband Iago sees Desdemona's handkerchief, he steals it and forbids Emilia to disclose its whereabouts to Desdemona. Iago plants the article in Cassio's room. Eventually, Othello sees Cassio with the handkerchief and accepts it as confirmation of Desdemona's infidelity.

In Act 5 Scene 2 Shakespeare builds up to a dramatic climax with Desdemona’s death when Othello strangles her and that of a pitiful Othello realises he has been tricked by Iago, takes his own life. Much debate has taken place as to whether Othello can be viewed as a tragic hero.

When Desdemona denies giving Cassio the handkerchief, Othello tells her that Cassio has confessed to sleeping with her and, in punishment, has been killed by Iago. Desdemona begins to weep, which only infuriates Othello since he believes that she is crying for Cassio.
Desdemona’s fate at the hands of her husband identifies her with the host of Shakespearen women who suffer from male aggression or neglect, such as Ophelia in Hamlet. But, as stated above, this treatment of his female characters doesn’t equate with the belief that they deserve
