It is ironic that the reluctant father and his son-in-law are linked by the language of loss they use. Like Othello, Brabantio dies grieving for his lost love. We are told Desdemona’s marriage was ‘mortal [fatal] to him’ (V.2.203).
Like the audience, Desdemona seems able only to watch as her husband is driven insane with jealousy. Though she maintains to the end that she is “guiltless,” Desdemona also forgives her husband (V.ii. 133). Her forgiveness of Othello may help the audience to forgive him as well.
When her husband is deployed to Cyprus in the service of the Republic of Venice, Desdemona accompanies him. There, her husband is manipulated by his ensign Iago into believing she is an adulteress , and, in the last act, she is murdered by her estranged spouse.

Desdemona is a model wife, if perhaps too trusting of Iago. She follows Othello to Cyprus and shows constant loyalty to him, even to the moment of death, when he kills her on false suspicions that she has been unfaithful.
