In this paper, we assess the economic benefits of demographic changes in India by employing econometric models and robustness checks based on panel data gathered over a period of more than three decades.
Changes in fertility and mortality are the two most important demographic factors contributing to population growth in India. The total fertility rate (TFR) in India declined from about 6.5 children per woman in the early 1960s to 2.3 children per woman in 2016 (a reduction of 4.2 children per woman in fewer than six decades).
