16 lis 2022 · The map below describes: 1) Critical Habitat for the delta smelt as defined by the Fish and Wildife Service. 2) Delta smelt historical range. 3) The majors rivers Sacramento (north) and San Joaquin (south) that feed into the Sacramento Delta and provide much needed freshwater, a barrier against saltwater encroachment from the bay.
The struggle to save the delta smelt, a fish native to the San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta ecosystem, has mobilized conservationists and pitted farmers, urban dwellers, and industrial interests against one another in a fierce debate over state water policy.
The delta smelt is a pelagic (lives in the open water column away from the bottom) and euryhaline species (tolerant of a wide salinity range). It has been collected from estuarine waters with salinities up to 14 parts per thousand.
Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Map courtesy of USGS. Such was the case on a recent winter morning as some 25,000 Delta smelt made the 50-mile trip via tanker truck from the U.C. Davis Fish Conservation and Culture Laboratory near Tracy to the chilly, murky waters of the Sacramento River at Rio Vista.
5 lis 2021 · Delta Smelt was listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the California Endangered Species Act (CESA) in 1993. In 2009, CESA status was changed to endangered. The decline of the Delta Smelt population is of great concern to scientists.
24 cze 2019 · Map of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Source: USGS. Also within the Sacramento- San Joaquin Delta reside the native delta smelt. Delta smelt are small free-swimming fish that are exceptionally vulnerable to environmental change.
Changes in the position of the low salinity zone, a habitat suitability index, turbidity, and water temperature modeled from four 100-year scenarios of climate change were evaluated for possible effects on delta smelt Hypomesus trans-pacificus, which is endemic to the Sacramento–San Joaquin.
